Why does my pet need dental care?

Just like people, pets need consistent dental care. As pets age, their teeth change. Tarter and plaque start to build and can cause gingivitis and other oral diseases. We recommend an anesthetized dental procedure for pets whose teeth have started to get tarter buildup. This procedure involves scaling the teeth to remove the tarter buildup and applying a polish to clean and buff the tooth's surface. Anesthesia is used because pets become stressed due to the high pitched sound emitted by the scaler and polisher.

How often should I get this done?

Each pet and their teeth are different. Some pets may need yearly dental care, while others may only need it every few years. Our veterinarians are happy to examine your pet's teeth and help make a dental care plan with you.

What other dental procedures do you offer?

We are also able to pull baby teeth in pets who have reached the 6 month old mark. Residual baby teeth often cause pain and tenderness, and sometimes will interfere with the pet's ability to eat. In some older pets, teeth need to be removed due to disease or breakage. Diseased or broken teeth will also cause discomfort and tenderness to the pet. They will interfere with the pet's ability to eat. Some diseased teeth may cause bacteria to enter the bloodstream and cause the pet to have other systemic problems.

Our veterinarians are happy to inspect your pet's teeth and help make a dental care plan with you.
