How does flea control work?
Flea control is a preventative measure to help insure your pet doesn't become infested with fleas. Fleas are small parasites that live off the blood of your pet. Gross huh? Flea prevention/control will kill fleas that are already present on your pet and prevent new fleas from nesting on your pet. Most flea preventatives also have a tick prevention element included. What is in flea control that makes it effective?
Most flea control products have similar ingredients. Fipronil is a common ingredient. It collects in the oils of the skin and hair follicles. From there, it continues to be released, which results in a long lasting activity against parasites. Another common ingredient is (S)-methoprene, an insect growth regulator. This growth regulator prevents the flea and tick lifecycle from advancing. In other words, no more adult fleas or ticks. What kinds of flea control are there?
There are lots of different brands of flea prevention on the market. Our clinic provides: We recommend veterinarian provided products simply because they are more effective than those sold "over the counter". How do you apply flea preventative?
Most flea preventatives are liquid topicals. We recommend that the liquid be placed as close to the skin as possible. On most pets, the hair should be parted to expose the skin. Usually, it is best to apply half the dose at the shoulder area and the other half at the base of the tail. The liquid should dry within 6-12 hours. It is non-toxic, but we recommend to go ahead and wash your hands after handling the product, just to be on the safe side. |
