Spaying or neutering your pet will help prevent disease and reproductive problems that occur with intact pets. Also, spaying and neutering help prevent urine marking and may also help reduce aggression and wandering behavior.
How long before my pet is "back to normal"?
All spays and neuters stay with us at the hospital for at least one night. This helps us to insure the pet's comfort and that they are able to eat and use the bathroom before we send them home. We also provide pain medications. Usually, internal sutures are used so that no stitches need to be removed. If external stitches are used, they should be removed 10-14 days after the surgery. Swimming, running, jumping, and other extreme exercise should be limited for the first week after surgery. This helps to insure that no stress or strain is put on the healing area.
What abnormal signs should I look for?
Some pets experience abnormal reactions at the surgery site. Swelling, oozing, and redness are all abnormal reaction signs. Some pets WILL be painful after surgery...this is normal and should be expected.
If your pet is exhibiting abnormal signs or symptoms, PLEASE call us so that we can examine your pet.
